A 12-year-old boy was killed after a crocodile dragged him into a river in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district while his uncle watched helplessly, police said. The victim's body was recovered several hours later.
The incident took place on Tuesday when the victim had accompanied his uncle, Udayraj Singh, to work on their agricultural field near the Ghaghra River.
While at the site, the boy went to the riverbank to relieve himself when a crocodile lying in wait attacked him.
Hearing the child's cries, his uncle rushed to rescue him and tried to pull him away from the reptile. However, the crocodile overpowered him and dragged the boy into the river before disappearing into the water.
As news of the attack spread, villagers gathered at the spot while police and personnel from the Bahraich Forest Division launched a search operation.
Officials deployed nets in an attempt to recover the child, but initial efforts were unsuccessful.
The body was eventually recovered later in the evening, police said.
The incident has sparked concern among residents living along the Ghaghra River, where crocodile sightings and attacks have been reported in the past.
