Glen Schofield, a game industry veteran who's held tenures as general manager of Visceral Games and co-director of Sledgehammer Games, is retiring.
Announced via LinkedIn yesterday, Schofield said in a video that, after 35 years of making games and directing them, he's officially retiring from the day-to-day work.
"It's been such an amazing career and I have so many people to thank for it, but I can't possibly do it all here," he says. "To my close friends and family and people who've stood by me, patted me on the back, listened to my crazy ideas, thank you so much."
During his career, Schofield has earned credits as the co-creator of the Dead Space series, as well as co-director in multiple Call of Duty titles: Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, and WWII, spanning tenures of over seven and eight years, respectively.
Years after co-founding Sledgehammer Games, an Activision subsidiary, he left the studio to pursue "new executive duties" inside the parent company. Then, in 2019, he founded Striking Distance Studios, studio behind the Dead Space-inspired Callisto Protocol.

Schofield parted ways with the Striking Distance team in 2023, a month after a layoff round of over 30 employees. According to his LinkedIn profile, his most recent credit is director and game advisor of Pinstripe Games for almost three years.
"To EA, thank you for letting me make Dead Space. And Activision, you gave me the keys to three Call of Duty games and I really appreciate your trust," the video continues. "To my family, thank you so much. You guys have been with me all through this ride. To my kids, thank you. You put up with the crazy dad, controllers all over the place. To my wife, Barb, you're my partner. I couldn't have done this alone."
Schofield concludes the announcement by speaking about the current state of the industry, which has been continually affected by layoffs and studio closures. "I know times are tough right now, but man, the future ahead is really, really bright."
