BYD’s New $29k Flagship EV Racked Up 65,000 Orders In 30 Hours

BYD's latest flagship electric sedan has made an immediate impact in China, attracting approximately 65,000 customer orders within just over 30 hours of its official launch. The rapid response highlights the growing demand for high-performance electric vehicles offered at mainstream prices.

The new Seal 08 officially went on sale on July 2 with a starting price of 196,900 yuan, or roughly $29,000 at current exchange rates. Despite its relatively accessible price point, the sedan offers premium technology, impressive performance, and long driving range typically associated with far more expensive EVs.

According to data cited by Car News China, roughly 40,000 of the orders came from reservation holders who placed blind deposits before pricing was announced. More than 25,000 additional orders were submitted after the official pricing was revealed, suggesting the final cost did little to dampen buyer enthusiasm.

The overwhelming demand has already placed pressure on BYD's production capacity. The automaker is increasing manufacturing output, but early buyers of the most popular trims are still expected to face delivery waits of several months.

The Seal 08 is offered in both fully electric and plug-in hybrid configurations, giving buyers multiple powertrain options. Early demand has heavily favored the battery-electric models, which account for more than 65 percent of initial orders.

At the top of the lineup is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant producing a combined 694 horsepower. BYD claims the flagship model can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds, placing it firmly in high-performance territory despite its relatively modest price.

The all-electric flagship also delivers a claimed driving range of up to 562 miles under China's CLTC testing cycle. Plug-in hybrid models combine electric driving capability with a gasoline engine for a maximum claimed combined range of approximately 1,031 miles using the same testing standard.

The Seal 08 rides on BYD's latest 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing faster charging and improved energy efficiency. The sedan also features the company's DiSus-A adaptive air suspension system, technology typically reserved for premium luxury vehicles.

Dimensionally, the Seal 08 competes in the full-size sedan segment with a spacious cabin and a wheelbase measuring just under 120 inches. Those proportions position it as BYD's flagship passenger car while providing ample interior space for both front and rear occupants.

The combination of advanced hardware, long range, and strong performance has helped distinguish the Seal 08 from many competitors in its price bracket. Buyers are effectively getting flagship specifications at a cost comparable to many conventional family sedans.

Strong demand has quickly exceeded BYD's initial production capacity. Current manufacturing output is estimated at approximately 8,000 Seal 08s per month, creating an immediate backlog as thousands of orders continue to accumulate.

To increase production, BYD has reportedly introduced double-shift operations while expanding manufacturing of its second-generation Blade battery cells. Even with those measures, delivery estimates for high-demand models currently range between two and three months.

Car News China notes that the reported order figures include an estimated margin of error of 10 to 15 percent. Even allowing for that variation, the Seal 08 has recorded one of the strongest launch performances in BYD's recent history.

The Seal 08's early success reinforces BYD's momentum in China's increasingly competitive electric vehicle market. The company has consistently expanded its lineup with vehicles that combine advanced technology, strong performance, and aggressive pricing.

Whether the Seal 08 will eventually be offered outside China remains unclear. For now, its launch demonstrates how rapidly demand can build when a flagship electric sedan delivers premium specifications at a price that appeals to a much broader group of buyers.
