Switzerland vs Algeria predictions as Round of 32 enters its final stages

Switzerland and Algeria are set to battle it out for a place in the last 16 at the World Cup.

Algeria had an indifferent group stage, in which they were beaten comfortably by defending champions Argentina, before beating Jordan 2-1 and taking part in an enthralling 3-3 draw with Austria.

Switzerland, meanwhile, started badly with a draw against Qatar, but improved with a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada.

The bookies have the Swiss as favourites for this game, with the impressive Johan Manzambi one of the tournament's emerging talents expected to perform once again.

The 20-year-old is drawing interest from the Premier League, with Newcastle United heavily linked, after scoring three goals from three games so far.

However, Algeria have a few talented players of their own who are capable of causing damage.

Riyad Mahrez showed against Austria that he is still more than capable of performing on a big occasion, while Houssem Aouar and Marseille's Amine Gouiri are very experienced.

The Swiss prefer a possession-based game, while Algeria are strong on the counter, so expect Switzerland to dominate the ball, just don't be surprised to see them get hit on the break.

It could be a little tighter than the bookies are predicting, although a draw wouldn't be welcomed by either side, particularly if it goes beyond extra-time.

Algeria have won just four of their nine penalty shootouts in all competitions, while Switzerland have won just one of six.
