Struggling with hair loss? This simple TikTok tip completely transformed my hair
I recently came across a TikTok video in which the creator shared a phrase that instantly resonated with me: "Dry hair is brittle hair and brittle hair is broken hair." I regret not remembering who said it because this simple line has had a profound impact on the health of my hair and I'd like to give credit where credit is due.At that time, my hair was falling out in alarming amounts, much more than the usual stray strands on my brush or in the shower. Whole clumps were coming out. One day, I showed my husband the ball of hair in my hands and his reaction was pure shock. "Do you need to go to the doctor?" he asked. It looked serious. However, that TikTok phrase kept echoing in my mind and I finally realized something crucial: I wasn't losing hair from the root; it was breaking along the strands. My hair was too dry and the hair I thought was shedding was actually snapping off due to brittleness. This shift in perspective marked the start of my journey to healthier hair.Nourishing Your Scalp with OilsI decided to try TikTok user @Vanilla Swirl's well-known oiling method. She blends castor oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, rosemary oil and a few others and massages it into her scalp weekly. Curious to see if it worked, I gave it a try. While it was soothing and definitely hydrating, I found the process to be a bit labor-intensive and messy. The oil needs to sit for hours to fully absorb and with the general busy-ness of life, I struggled to keep up with the routine. Still, the essential message stuck with me: hydration is key.Focus on Oil for the Hair LengthsAfter returning home from our summer vacation, I decided to simplify the process. Instead of dedicating time to weekly scalp treatments, which are really meant to stimulate hair growth), I started applying oils directly to my hair after every wash, to prevent breakage. While my hair was still damp, I'd smooth a generous amount of oil into the lengths and ends. Then, midway through drying, I'd apply a bit more. Finally, once fully dry, I'd use a bit more oil to seal it all in.I do this just on the hair shafts and ends, not on my scalp. My favorite hair oil is Moroccanoil, which leaves my hair feeling silky and glossy and smelling amazing. But when I need something more budget-friendly, I opt for Trader Joe's hair oil. Both give great results.Noticeable ResultsThe improvements were nearly immediate. Six months into this routine, the changes are dramatic. I'm no longer pulling out clumps of hair in the shower. My bathroom floor is free of broken strands. Now, my hair feels thick, healthy and luxurious. In my case, the problem wasn't related to hormones, vitamins or a medical condition, which is what I worried about when I saw so much hair fall. It was simply that my hair was too dry, and once I addressed that, everything started to improve.I'm not a professional and while every head of hair is unique, I think this mantra might help others struggling with breakage as well: "Dry hair is brittle hair and brittle hair is broken hair." So simple.Want more stories like this? Follow me on Yahoo!
