TikTok: The Mother & Daughter Killers
One night in February 2022, on the A46 in Leicestershire, 21-year-olds Saqib Hussain and Hashim Ijazuddin were killed after their car was run off the road. In September 2023, 24-year-old TikTok influencer Mahek Bukhari and her mother, 46-year-old Ansreen Bukhari, were convicted of their murder and both jailed for life - why? This is one of the most tangled true-crime cases in recent years, but it boils down to the fact that Saqib had threatened to reveal that he was having an affair with the mother, and the Bukharis then hired a gang to kill them. There is plenty of build-up to that - Saqib had apparently spent around £3,000 on the relationship and wanted it back, and his phone is said to have contained explicit images of Ansreen, who had started appearing in her daughter’s glamorous social media posts about fashion and beauty. Then, during the affair, Ansreen asked for her daughter’s help in dealing with Saqib. It’s a tawdry tale, one that carries a stark warning about the self-obsession that can arise from excessive social media use. (Two episodes)
