The first official XCOM miniatures game is coming this fall from Modiphius!
Hello, commander…
Modiphius Entertainment has partnered with legendary video game publisher, Firaxis to bring XCOM Enemy Unknown to tabletops around the world. Turn-based video games and turn-based miniatures games are a match made in tactical heaven so this is definitely news to be excited about. Even better, it’s designed for both solo and co-operative play.
The First Wave of Pre-orders
Pre-orders for fall and winter release start in July and will include a healthy set of stuff to get you playing. The Core Rulebook is the keystone release, and its game mechanics are based on the popular Five Parsecs From Home rules set. The Core book is 180 pages in full color and covers all the basics of game play.
It includes rules for creating your squad, generating XCOM missions as the war progresses, a complete encounter and combat system, building and expanding the XCOM headquarters, researching new technologies, creating and collecting terrain, plus a player-versus-player mode for those who want to play the aliens for once!
While the Core Rulebook won’t release until later in the year you’ll immediately receive a PDF version with your pre-order so you can start learning the rules or even playing games immediately. Along with the book, you’ll be able to pre-order a number of accessories including acrylic tokens, reference cards, official dice, and of course, the first wave of miniatures for the game.
Operatives and Aliens
The initial wave of miniatures for pre-order include the classic six-member XCOM Operatives squad and of course, a variety of nefarious enemies. Sectoids, Sectoid Commanders, Thin Men, Outsiders, Floaters, Chrysalids, and Seekers will be the first threats your team must face. You’ll also be able to order a set of Infection Pods to dress up your terrain with the iconic look of an XCOM battlefield.
As time goes on, new aliens will appear to threaten your Operatives. Each month new encounter sets will be released. These new miniatures and rules will add more content inspired by the video game to the tabletop with rules for tech upgrades, MEC troopers, and even the notorious troops of EXALT.
Later releases will include S.H.I.V.’s (and their variants), XCOM Veteran Operatives in popular armours, Mutons (including Berserkers and Elites), Cyberdiscs, Drones, Mechtoids, MEC Troopers, Heavy Floaters, Ethereals, Sectopods, and the EXALT.
It looks like XCOM is going to be getting some really deluxe treatment from Modiphius and I can’t wait to see more of it. XCOM is just such an obviously good match for tabletop gaming that I think this might be something really special.
You have been chosen to lead this initiative. To oversee our first—and last—line of defense.
