D&D: A New Unearthed Arcana Updates The ‘Villainous Options’

A new Unearthed Arcana just dropped, with three updated villainous subclasses: the Circle of the Titan Druid, Hellknight Fighter, and Demonic Sorcerer.

It seems WotC is cooking up something villainous for sure (and for next year, I’ll just bet) with a second round of Villainous Options in a fresh new Unearthed Arcana that just released today. The New UA, fittingly titled Villainous Options Update, focuses on three subclasses: the Circle of the Titan Druid, the Hell Knight Fighter, and the Demonic Sorcery Sorcerer. Yeah, I know, it’s a clunky name, but that’s how all Sorcerer subclasses go. Anyway, let’s take a look.

After the latest round of Unearthed Arcana feedback, it seems that three subclasses stuck out as being popular enough to keep playing with, but still in need of a bit of work. In fact, most of the other subclasses were well-received enough to move to internal testing/tweaking. The only one that didn’t make the cut was the Primordial Patron Warlock, who is now simmering on a back burner somewhere.

First up, the kaiju-shaped Circle of the Titan, who was definitely in need of a boost. I think the biggest problem here was scaling both the damage and the ability to take hits (because otherwise you don’t really feel like a giant monster). But it looks like WotC has given it another pass – we’ll take a closer look in the coming days.

Then there’ the Hell Knight Fighter, which I’m pleasantly surprised to see made the cut. It wasn’t my first pick for a subclass for sure, since it was kind of just all about dealing bleeding wounds and not dealing enough damage. But now that looks to be different, with a little bit of enhanced hellfire as well in the mix.

Finally, the subclass with the most readily apparent changes, the Demonic Sorcery Sorcerer. It’s no longer the weird “be kind of a frontliner” mix and instead seems to be all about conjuring abyssal ruptures and warping the world around you with corrupting magic.

But wait there’s more! In addition to the three new subclasses, there’s eight new feats to try out: four origin feats and four epic boon feats. They range from new ways to fight dirty to a boon that rewards your unswerving devotion to whatever cause you’ve pledged to.

We’ll take a closer look at everything over the next few days (along with more from Ravenloft) so check back for more!

Time to get ready for that Book of Vile Darkness (or whatever it ends up being called)!
