Man appears in court charged with attempted murder following Belfast incident
A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder following a stabbing in north Belfast on Monday. Hadi Alodid, 30, of Duncairn Avenue, is accused of attempting to murder Stephen Ogilvy. He is also charged with possessing a knife in a public place and threatening to kill an NHS radiographer. The court appearance comes as tensions remain high in parts of Belfast following a night of disorder. Two Belfast schools are due to close today amid concerns further unrest could occur later in the day. Protesters gathered at a number of locations across the city on Tuesday evening, causing significant disruption from around 7pm. Speaking last night, Northern Ireland secretary Hilary Benn, said: “People have been rightly shocked by the brutal attack in north Belfast, but the police must be allowed to do their job so the law can take its course. “The scenes of disorder we have witnessed in some parts of Northern Ireland this evening are only damaging communities and putting innocent lives at risk. There is no justification at all for this type of destruction and thuggery.” Sinn Féin MP John Finucane speaking yesterday condemned the violence. The North Belfast MP said: “The scenes we are seeing this evening are shameful and there is no place for it on our streets. Family homes and businesses attacked, cars and buses burned out, and parts of our community in flames. “The disgust and revulsion at the horrific attempted murder is understandable. However, no one has the right to spread fear, terrorise innocent families, or bring lawless disorder onto our streets. “These actions which are intended to whip up fear, division and tension are completely unacceptable. Our focus must remain on supporting the victim, standing with his family and ensuring the perpetrator is brought to justice.”
