Longford v Down Live: Updates from Pearse Park as the Mournemen look to advance in the Tailteann Cup
Down took on Longford today in the third round of this year’s Tailteann Cup at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park. The Mournemen confirmed a quarter-final place with the hosts ending their summer of football early and are now forced to watch on from home and wonder what could have been. The goals were the difference between the sides, as two majors either side of the break helped Down keep the Leinster side firmly out of reach for most of the game. The Mournmen, winners of the competition in 2024, maintain their hope of ensnaring Sam Maguire football next year by lifting the trophy once more. The last time these two teams met was in 2023, when Down fought back in the second half of a preliminary quarter-final to win in Newry.Round two saw the Ulster semi-finalists lose out in Tullamore to Offaly, who secured a seeded draw in the quarter-finals, with Conor Laverty’s side doomed to the long way round against Longford. The O’Farrell county’s last round tie was against one of the front-runners for the tournament, Clare, with the Banner county suffering a shock defeat to the O’Farrell county.
