BMW recalls new iX3 over electric shock risk

The issue stems from a defective charging electronics system, which can cause voltage to be present on the vehicle body while charging. Anyone touching the car during this process could therefore receive an electric shock. However, according to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), there have so far been no reports of serious injuries or property damage linked to the defect. The recall appears in the authority’s database under KBA reference number 16565R, while BMW has assigned the internal campaign code 0061750900. The issue affects 145 vehicles worldwide that were produced between 25 November 2025 and 20 February 2026. Of these, 28 vehicles are registered in Germany.BMW will now bring the affected vehicles into workshops to replace the comfort charging electronics, specifically the onboard charger that enables the iX3 to charge at up to 400 kW. Both the KBA and BMW will contact affected owners by post.According to the BMW-focused blog Bimmer Today, BMW discovered the issue during routine product inspections. The defect has also triggered a delivery stop for customer vehicles already delivered to dealerships. Dealers may hand over these vehicles only after completing the necessary repairs. The iX3 is considered a major hope for BMW in the field of electric mobility: the battery-electric SUV, built at BMW’s new plant in Debrecen (Hungary), is the brand’s first representative of the Neue Klasse and is now produced in two shifts. The first all-wheel-drive variant introduced, the iX3 50 xDrive, delivers a system output of 345 kW and, combined with a 108 kWh battery, achieves a range of 805 kilometres. The recently launched entry-level model, the iX3 40 with rear-wheel drive, combines 235 kW of motor power with an 82.6 kWh battery and offers a range of 635 kilometres. Prices start at €63,400.kba-online.de, bimmertoday.de (both in German)
