Anthropic’s New Deal With Elon Musk’s SpaceX Could Be a Real AI Game Changer

The excitement surrounding the IPO of Elon Musk’s SpaceX is almost palpable at this point. The largest IPO the world has ever seen could surely make a splash in the first days, weeks, and months following the landing.
I have no idea what the day-one valuation will be, but it feels like the many followers of Elon Musk might be committed, regardless of how heated. In any case, the SpaceX IPO seems to be very well-timed, with the Nasdaq 100 going into overdrive, spiking to hit a new all-time high on Friday as investors applauded the good jobs number.
With recent news breaking that Anthropic, which has arguably pulled quite far ahead in the AI race, will lease the entirety of the Colossus 1 supercluster (and yes, it’s as big as it sounds, with more than 220,000 Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA | NVDA Price Prediction) GPUs and plenty of power), I do think that we’re witnessing a very favorably transition as Elon Musk does business with a rival he may have been critical of just a few months ago. Either way, there’s no reason why great rivals cannot also be great allies, especially given the stakes on the line for America in this great AI race.
SpaceX and Anthropic inked a deal. It’s a colossal one
The co-opetition (co-operation and competition) model may very well be what helps the U.S. pull further ahead as firms work together to advance their efforts, but also compete in a fiercely competitive market. If the AI revolution is as big as investors think, though, I do think that there’s an abundance of rewards to go around, and that makes the case for more alliances. The same goes for circular deals, which ultimately might help the cause with fewer inefficiencies.
So, what makes the latest Anthropic deal with Elon Musk’s firm such a big deal?
With Elon Musk going at it with OpenAI in an ongoing trial, perhaps it’s best that Musk and his companies stand in Anthropic’s corner, which is the top rival of Sam Altman’s OpenAI. Is the rival of a rival actually a friend?
It’s tough to say, but either way, I think SpaceX has a lot to gain from what could be the beginning of a profoundly powerful partnership that helps xAI and Anthropic both gain a leg up over the competition.
Given that Anthropic has prioritized safety while keeping its Claude Mythos in preview, granting members of Project Glasswing valuable time to patch things up, one could argue that Anthropic is shaping up to be not only a powerful partner but one that really is erring on the side of caution.
It’s a major win-win move
As xAI looks forward to Colossus 2, I think letting Anthropic get in on Colossus 1 results in a win-win kind of scenario. What’s even more interesting is how the co-opetition could evolve. Perhaps the AI race is more than just a race to the finish line, but a baseball game where you want to have as many bases covered as possible as we move through the innings.
In any case, look forward to more surprising deals like this in the AI scene, especially as firms look to gravitate slightly more towards co-operation than competition. Arguably, Project Glasswing seems to suggest that many firms in the AI race are, in fact, “playing on the same team,” something I outlined in a prior piece.
For now, Elon Musk has arguably secured one of the most reliable tenants (from a financial perspective and where Anthropic stands in the AI race) out there for SpaceX’s data centers. That’s a massive win for both firms, especially SpaceX as it readies for IPO day.
