Wadephul urges Iran not to overplay its hand in talks with Saar

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Tuesday urged Tehran to return to the negotiating table following Iranian drone and missile attacks on the United Arab Emirates (UAE)."We call on Iran not to overplay its cards," Wadephul said in Berlin during a joint press conference with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar."It is becoming more urgent by the day that Iran now accepts the offer of negotiations," Wadephul said, adding that Germany condemned the latest attacks.A return to conflict had to be avoided, he said, calling for the war to end. "But it must be ended in such a way that no danger arises from Iran any longer - not for Israel, not for the countries in the region and not for us in Europe," the German foreign minister said.Wadephul said Iran should not be permitted to possess a nuclear weapon. It should give up its ballistic missile programme and cease its inflammatory policies in the region.Germany and Israeli fully shared these goals and security interests, he said.Saar described the latest attacks on the UAE as proof that the regime in Tehran had the character of a madman. Tehran had to be prevented from acquiring a nuclear weapon, he said.Anyone who saw how the regime behaved towards its neighbours would understand the need to keep it from acquiring a nuclear weapon, Saar said. The attack on the UAE caused a major fire in an oil depot in Fujairah port. In addition, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had launched missiles at US Navy ships as a warning.
