Is Carl Webster dead on Coronation Street? Fate sealed after worrying twist
Carl Webster looks in trouble on Coronation Street tonight - after he was rushed to hospital.Despite having an affair with his brother's wife, car theft, a hit and run and him blackmailing his mother, who has dementia, Carl (Jonathan Howard) found himself stuck under a car when someone menacingly let down the car jack and left him fighting for his life. Tonight, we find out he makes it to hospital - but that's where things go very wrong."If Carl survives I think everything he is gonna go through this week will be life-changing for him. If he dies, the Websters, or most of them, are gonna be mixed emotions. If he survives then hopefully he has the chance to redeem himself a little bit," he said.Asked if he'd like Carl to change if he does get to survive, Jonathan confessed: "As long as he can still be an annoying little brat. If he didn't lose that I'd be happy to have a bit of humility."Jonathan also opened up about a possible exit and how he'd feel if he had to bid goodbye to the show."I'd be very grateful for the time I have had here. I feel very lucky to play the part I've done. He is so much fun to play. It's much better to do that stuff in-character than in real life!" he explained."When I started, I was winding people up, doing selfish things, robbing cars, hit and runs, all these things. [For me] his only redeeming feature was he had this love for her, so hopefully if he survives this week he's gonna learn from his mistakes," he told us."I don't think he's as dark as others that have been on the street. He's a selfish, egotistical brat and he just needs his comeuppance. Maybe a slap around the face and he'll change his ways."Jonathan feels he needs to have empathy for Carl - and find the "humanity" in the complicated character, who has caused quite a lot of trouble since his arrival on the Cobbles."I’ve got to have empathy and compassion and find the humanity in him. Especially if I’m being paid to play this guy, I’ve got to find the empathy and compassion there. If I’d grown up my whole life not really knowing who my family was and feeling left like I was left on the side, how would that impact me? How would I react?" he said."I’ve got to play what’s on the page, but I’ve got to try and find the humanity in that and the reason behind it. He’s got feelings for his mum, yes. Does he know how to express them? No. I don’t really think so. Does he know how to love? I don’t really think so. I’m really intrigued to see, if he survives, if he’s going to have a redemptive arc because I’ve had a wonderful, fun time for the 12 months I’ve been here, you know, being a mosquito and annoying the hell out of people."Like this s tory?
