Met Éireann cancels Status Yellow rain warning for two counties, as wet Bank Holiday weekend forecast

The national forecaster had issued the warning on Wednesday for counties Cork and Waterford, warning of persistent and heavy rain giving rise to localised flooding, difficult travel conditions and poor visibility.It kicked in at 3am on Thursday morning and was to last until 6pm in the evening.However, in a statement to the Irish Independent, Met Éireann confirmed that the rain warning is no longer in place."Forecasters constantly monitor weather observations and latest model runs and make decisions based on these,” a spokesperson said.“In this case, the latest models indicated that the rainfall was unlikely to be as heavy as previously forecast by models.“As such, the warning was no longer required and was cancelled accordingly.”As for today’s forecast, the cloud and rain in the southwest will spread northeastwards through the day, becoming heavy at times. However, northeastern counties will remain dry with sunny spells and temperatures of between 14C and 18C.Thursday night will remain largely cloudy with rainfall in places. Temperatures willl dip to 8C to 11C.Friday will see the trend of cloud and rain continue with sunny spells possible in places. The west will bear the brunt of the showers in the afternoon as temperatures range from 14C and 18C.Friday night will stay wet in many parts as rain becomes more persistent overnight in temperatures of up to 11C.Those showers will continue into Saturday morning, ensuring a showery start to the May Bank Holiday weekend. Met Éireann says some heavier spells of rainfall may lead to thunder in places as temperatures sit between 12C and 15C.7-Day Weather forecast 24th to 30th of April 2026The north of the country will see drier conditions develop on Saturday evening after a brief spell of widespread rain. Clear spells are expected with temperatures of 7C to 11C.Moving in to Sunday, another cloudy day is forecast with widespread showers which could be quite heavy in some areas. Temperatures will be between 12C and 15C.According to the national forecaster, Bank Holiday Monday will be a “largely cloudy day” with the odd bit of rainfall in temperatures of 10C to 14C.Beyond this, Met Éireann emphasises “uncertainty in the details” with a mostly cloudy day forecast for Tuesday.Next week in general is predicted to be “mostly settled with high pressure dominating” according to its extended range forecast, meaning “drier than average” conditions are possible next week, but not to the exception of any rainfall at times.
