Sonic 4 Can Finally Deliver A Team-Up 3 Years In The Making
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will feature a plethora of major character returns, meaning it can finally deliver a long-awaited team-up three years in the making. The story of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will feature a story inspired by 1993's Sonic CD, with Sonic, Amy, and Metal Sonic at the forefront. In addition, the movie will feature plenty of returning video game characters with major roles to play. Most major characters from Sonic the Hedgehog's film series are going to be coming back for the sequel film. This includes Tails and Knuckles, as well as Dr. Robotnik. Jim Carrey's return will be a vital element of the movie, since he was previously thought to have died during the Eclipse Cannon explosion at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. But he's not the only character whose fate has been determined by Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The cast listing for the film confirm that Keanu Reeves will be returning as Shadow the Hedgehog, who was last seen having survived the Eclipse Cannon explosion in Sonic the Hedgehog 3's post-credits scenes. As of writing, it's unclear what his role in the movie will be and how long he'll appear for. But his return means an anticipated crossover might finally happen in the movie. Prior to the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Reeves and Idris Elba, who plays Knuckles, proposed the idea of a spinoff focused on the two characters. Their pitch, which they referred to as either Shadow Knuckles or Knuckles and Shadow, could find some way of coming to life in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Having Shadow and Knuckles team up in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 would be the perfect way to address Reeves and Elba's spinoff idea, a clever nod to the actors wanting to see their characters onscreen together more often. The pair didn't interact much throughout Sonic the Hedgehog 3, outside of Shadow very quickly beating Knuckles in a fight when Team Sonic first met him. Pairing them together would be compelling for the movie universe because, in the games, Knuckles and Shadow rarely interact directly. While both were part of the same important storylines in Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Forces, among others, they didn't work together directly that often. The only exception is in select missions of Shadow the Hedgehog, where Knuckles is a temporary partner character.

The closest the pair have come to working together directly is in the now-discontinued Sonic the Hedgehog comic series from Archie Comics. In Issue #67-70, a story arc titled "Total Eclipse," Knuckles works with Shadow to protect the Master Emerald from Eclipse the Darkling, a member of the nefarious Black Arms. While they do fight here as well, they ultimately join forces to stop the antagonist. A similar approach could be used for their onscreen team-up. In addition, the pair were also introduced in the movie universe as rivals of Sonic, who, ultimately, became heroes in their own ways. This would make their team-up in the movie universe even more meaningful, playing off their connection as rivals to Sonic while still helping to fight Metal Sonic.
How Shadow & Knuckles Can Team Up In Sonic 4
Although it's unclear how Shadow and Knuckles might work closely together in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, it seems likely it wouldn't be until later in the movie. Shadow's return in the film series, coupled with his independent post-credits scene, indicates his story will initially be separate from the rest of the group. When he converges, it'll likely be at a high point in the film.
This means Shadow's involvement in the main plot could come during a pivotal action scene, such as the group fighting Metal Sonic's army or Robotnik himself. It could mean Shadow and Knuckles work directly together in a fight against a group of robots, either in a single scene together, or in a string of scenes that see them working together more in-depth. No matter how the film approaches it, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has an opportunity to bring Reeves and Elba's vision of a Shadow and Knuckles crossover to life. Even if it wasn't a full-fledged spinoff, the moments they share would be a perfect nod to the idea of the pair sharing a story together — perhaps even leading to something more in the future.
