Furious GAA legend slams Ryder Cup suggestion as 'absolute nonsense'
Waterford GAA legend John Mullane believes the idea to move next year's National Hurling league final to September in order to line up with the Ryder Cup is "absolute nonsense."Earlier this month, the GAA confirmed that they were looking at hosting next year's League final at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick in the same week that the Ryder Cup was being staged at Adare Manor. The logic being that hosting the final at this time of year so close to the Ryder Cup venue would attract a wider international audience for the game. The notion has received mixed responses to say the least, with Mullane summing up the feelings of many.“Lads, what do you think of this nonsense?" Mullane said on the Irish Independent's GAA podcast."Absolute nonsense of trying to put a league final on in September to coincide with the Ryder Cup. I mean, oh my, don’t get me started now. Jesus!”There are numerous obstacles that the GAA will have to manoeuvre in order for the final to be played in September.Firstly, it would need to be approved by clubs as it will impact the club season schedule. Secondly, it will need to be backed by county players as it will increase the length of the intercounty season. What this would mean for the rest of the league season is also a question that hasn't been answered. Will the league be played throughout the spring as normal, take a long break for the championship, and then return for a one-off game months later? That seems to be the most likely scenario, albeit, how that would increase interest in a hurling league that many see as a phoney war to begin with is anyone's guess. The GAA have confirmed that they are looking into the possible switch, with no timeframe provided for when a decision might be communicated.Click here to sign up to our sport newsletter, bringing you the top stories and biggest headlines from Ireland and beyond
