What's at stake in Europe's top soccer leagues: Titles, UCL qualification, relegation

Apr 21, 2026, 12:20 PM ETThe end of the European soccer season is fast approaching, and the battles for major honors, UEFA Champions League qualification and relegation are truly heating up.Here's where things stand across the English Premier League, Spanish LaLiga, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and French Ligue 1. This story will be updated weekly through the season's final day, so be sure to check back frequently for the latest information.Last updated: April 21Title contenders: Arsenal, Manchester CityThe title race is on! Manchester City's 2-1 win over Arsenal last weekend has blown the race wide open. City had been nine points behind Arsenal earlier this month, but they now find themselves just three points behind with a game in hand. From here, there are a few permutations to consider. Arsenal have been league leaders since September, but City would end that streak on Wednesday and go top on goal difference if they can beat Burnley. As ESPN senior writer Mark Ogden writes, if both teams win the remainder of the fixtures, then the race will come down to their goal difference.Arsenal would have been set to cruise to the title had they won at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Now they must go toe-to-toe with City in a race that could scarcely be closer.Champions League race: Manchester United, Aston Villa, LiverpoolThe Premier League will be granted an extra place in the UEFA Champions League next season due to the UEFA club coefficient rankings. It means the top five finishers will play in Europe's premier competition next season. That's good news for Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool, who can now vie for an extra spot. There is still a chance that Chelsea, who have collapsed in form and lost their last four league games, can still crack the top five, but the eight-point gap makes that an uphill battle. The same goes for Brentford and Bournemouth, who are level with Chelsea on 48 points.United and Villa are each just two wins away from confirming their place in the top five, meaning United could conceivably confirm that with a win over arch rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on May 3.As for Liverpool, they are three wins away. In addition to that United clash, they also face Chelsea (H) and Aston Villa (A) in consecutive matches next month before their season finale against Brentford (H).Europa League / Conference League hopefuls: Chelsea, Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Brighton, Sunderland, Newcastle United, AFC BournemouthWith Chelsea falling well behind in the race to qualify for the Champions League, there is even the chance they miss out on European football altogether.Just six points separate Chelsea (sixth) and Newcastle United (14th). Any of the teams within that range could yet earn a Europa League place next season. Of those teams, Brentford and Bournemouth have never played in continental competition, while Brighton and Sunderland have played in Europe only once.In terms of which places will be granted to which European competition, that depends on the outcome of various cup competitions. If Leeds and Southampton fail to win the FA Cup, then sixth and seventh will earn a place in the Europa League, with eighth being granted a place in the Conference League. That order could still change if an English team wins either the Europa League or Conference League this season.Relegation battle: Wolves (r), Burnley, West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham HotspurFor two straight seasons, the three teams that came up from the Championship were sent straight back down the following season. This year, however, that won't happen. Newly promoted Sunderland have already reached the golden standard safety net of 40 points, meaning their place in next season's Premier League is not in doubt. Other teams cannot be so confident.Bottom-of-the-pack Wolves were officially relegated on Monday after West Ham earned a draw with Crystal Palace. Second-bottom Burnley are also in grave danger: They will also be sent down should they lose to Manchester City on Wednesday. The biggest story of the season, though, could be in who finishes in the final relegation place. Tottenham Hotspur played in the Champions League round of 16 as recently as March, but they find themselves in a very precarious spot, having failed to win a single league game in 2026. Their next clash -- an away trip to Wolves -- is, on paper, their best chance at ending that streak. Already two points behind West Ham and five points behind Nottingham Forest, failure to beat Wolves could put Tottenham in an even more difficult position.Title contenders: Barcelona, Real MadridBarcelona have built a solid nine-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of the table. The title hasn't been decided just yet, though Madrid's draw with Girona last week dented their chances of taking the trophy. The two Spanish powerhouses are slated to meet for one more Clásico on May 10, and a Madrid win on the road could make for a tense final few matchweeks.Other potential tripwires for the Blaugrana include a visit to Getafe on April 25 and facing Real Betis at home on May 17.Champions League race: Atlético Madrid, Villarreal, Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad, GetafeVillarreal and Atlético Madrid are virtual locks for top-four places, with fourth-placed Atléti a fair distance ahead of Real Betis, but a fifth Champions League spot could be up for grabs. UEFA awards five Champions League places to the two nations whose clubs perform the best overall in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, using a formula that produces a coefficient score for each nation. It's far from a guarantee at this stage, with Germany threatening to overtake Spain, but that potential fifth spot would open the door for Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad and Getafe to qualify for the Champions League.Europa League / Conference League hopefuls: Osasuna, Espanyol, Athletic Club, Girona, Rayo Vallecano, Valencia9. Osasuna (39 points, minus-1 goal differential)10. Espanyol (38, minus-11)11. Athletic Club (38, minus-12)12. Girona (38, minus-12)13. Rayo Vallecano (35, minus-9)14. Valencia (35, minus-12)These teams still have an outside shot to qualify for the Europa League or Conference League, though the number of clubs they would have to leapfrog mean a midtable finish is far more likely. While Osasuna, Espanyol, Athletic Club and Girona are tightly packed, Osasuna's far superior goal differential gives them a better chance of winning any tiebreaks with the clubs above them.Relegation battle: Alaves, Mallorca, Sevilla, Elche, Levante, Real Oviedo15. Mallorca (34, minus-12)16. Sevilla (34, minus-13)17. Alavés (33, minus-11)18. Elche (32, minus-9)19. Levante (29, minus-16)20. Real Oviedo (27, minus-27)The gap has narrowed between the bottom six clubs and the clubs above them -- Rayo Vallecano and Valencia are looking over the shoulders in 13th and 14th place.Overall, the battle looks set to go down to the wire, as only two points separate 15th-placed Mallorca from Elche in 18th.Champions: Bayern MunichBayern Munich were crowned Bundesliga champions with a 4-2 win over Stuttgart on April 19. It was the second straight league title for the Rekordmeister and their 35th all time.Harry Kane and Bayern Munich clinched the Bundesliga title on April 19. Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesChampions League race: Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart, TSG Hoffenheim, Bayer LeverkusenThe top-four race remains highly competitive. Borussia Dortmund's Champions League spot is all but secured, but four teams are still in the running for the last two spots.A four-match winning streak for RB Leipzig has them well positioned. They would secure their place with three more wins in their final four matches, regardless of other results. For VfB Stuttgart, TSG Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen, this could very well go down to the wire. There also remains a chance for Germany to secure a fifth Champions League place. That will be determined by how Bayern Munich and SC Freiburg perform in this year's Champions League and Europa League, respectively, relative to Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano in their European ties.As things stand, fifth place will gain entry to the Europa League, while sixth place will head to the Conference League.Relegation battle: Werder Bremen, St. Pauli, VfL Wolfsburg, Heidenheim15. Werder Bremen (31, minus-18)16. St. Pauli (26, minus-25)17. Wolfsburg (24, minus-25)18. Heidenheim (19, minus-33)At the bottom of the table, Heidenheim look likely to go down, but plenty remains up in the air after a 3-1 win over Union Berlin last weekend boosted their hopes of survival. Wolfsburg currently occupy the other automatic relegation spot, while St. Pauli would be in line to participate in the promotion/relegation playoff with the third-place finisher of the 2. Bundesliga.Title contenders: Internazionale, Napoli, AC MilanInter Milan have pulled away in the title race. With a 12-point advantage over AC Milan and Napoli and a massively superior goal differential, Inter would effectively seal the title with a win this weekend over Torino. If Milan and Napoli both drop points as well, the title would be officially theirs. All three teams are comfortably among the Champions League places.Champions League race: Como, Juventus, AS Roma, AtalantaFour teams are left competing for fourth place, and Juventus are firmly in control after winning three straight games and watching Como fail to keep up. Regardless of how everything turns out, it will have been a wonderful season for Como, who are two seasons removed from competing in Serie B.Roma are now level with points on Como and still in the running, while Atalanta will now be hoping to simply qualify for any European competition. They are four points behind Roma for Italy's Conference League spot.Relegation battle: Fiorentina, Cagliari, Cremonese, Lecce, Hellas Verona, Pisa15. Fiorentina (36, minus-8)16. Cagliari (33, minus-12)17. Cremonese (28, minus-20)18. Lecce (28, minus-22)19. Hellas Verona (18, minus-31)20. Pisa (18, minus-32)Two of the three relegated teams have likely been decided already, as Pisa and Hellas Verona are nine points adrift of safety.Fiorentina are the biggest surprise in the bottom six, having struggled for much of the 2025-26 campaign after four straight seasons finishing top eight in Serie A. But they have lifted themselves up by earning points in each of their past five matches, and their chances of avoiding the drop look extremely strong at this point.Title contenders: Paris Saint-Germain, LensThere are no prizes for guessing who is top of Ligue 1 this season. Paris Saint-Germain have won the past four French titles and are well-placed to win a fifth straight. However, a rare home defeat to Lyon on Sunday has added intrigue to the French title race.PSG are one point clear of second-place Lens heading into their clash at home against Nantes. Another defeat would set up a nail-biting end to the season, with the two title chases due to face off in the penultimate game of the season on May 13.Elsewhere, the top three finishers will be granted a place in next season's Champions League league phase, while fourth will get admission to the Champions League qualification playoffs. Lens, even if they miss out on the title, look likely to be playing in the league phase, while Marseille, AS Monaco, Lyon and Stade Rennais are jostling to claim the final two spots.Relegation battle: Le Havre, Nice, Auxerre, Nantes, Metz14. Le Havre (30, minus-13)15. Nice (29, minus-22)16. Auxerre (25, minus-14)17. Nantes (20, minus-21)18. Metz (15, minus-39)Like the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 automatically relegates its bottom two finishers, with the 16th-placed side entering a playoff against the third-placed Ligue 2 side. As it stands, Auxerre would be the team competing in the two-legged playoff.
