A Big Star Wars Cameo Teases A Dark Turn For Disney+'s New Show

The ending of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord episodes 5 and 6 teases a dark turn, literally and figuratively, for the story and characters, thanks to a massive Star Wars cameo. Maul - Shadow Lord scattered Easter eggs throughout episodes 5 and 6, but the biggest one undoubtedly came in the final moments. After the ending of Maul - Shadow Lord episodes 3 and 4, the Empire established its presence on Janix in episodes 5 and 6. This led to the emergence of an Inquisitor, Marrok, who appeared as a ghostly reconstruction in Ahsoka. This Marrok, though, is one of Star Wars' Imperial Inquisitors, the band of trained Force users dedicated to tracking down surviving Jedi or other Force-related threats to Palpatine. In Maul - Shadow Lord, Marrok finds both of these targets via Devon, Daki, and Maul himself. Warning! The following sections contain spoilers for Maul - Shadow Lord episodes 5 and 6. After a lengthy lightsaber duel, a botched escape plan from Janix, and a huge Star Wars cameo, the aforementioned Easter egg, Maul - Shadow Lord episodes 5 and 6 came to a close. What this means for the show is a dark final four episodes, both for specific characters and their storylines, and the entire planet of Janix. Emperor Palpatine's Dark Shadow Looms Over Maul Emperor Palpatine speaking in Revenge of the Sith with his Sith eyes visible under his hood In the final moments of Maul - Shadow Lord episode 6, Marrok retreats from a duel with Maul. Once escaping, he has a conversation with none other than Emperor Palpatine himself. While the person on the other end of Marrok's call isn't shown or heard, the shape of Palpatine's now-iconic hood can be seen on the left-hand side of the screen. Although Darth Vader is commonly known as the leader of the Inquisitorius in Star Wars, Maul's involvement in the story teases that Palpatine is the one leading Marrok. After all, Palpatine fears Maul and has long worked to remove him as a wildcard that could ruin his plans for galactic dominance. On the other side, Palpatine is Maul's direct source of motivation for revenge, not Vader. In fact, Vader and Maul have no real thematic reasoning to be antagonistic towards one another, aside from the fact that Maul hates the Empire. Therefore, Vader would almost be akin to just another Inquisitor for Maul, meaning Palpatine is likely the dark shadow directing Marrok to destroy Maul. If so, this sets up a rematch between Maul and Palpatine after their duel in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Also, Palpatine could send Vader himself after Maul. Either way, Marrok's final scene in Maul - Shadow Lord episode 6's ending implies that the darkest force in the Star Wars galaxy is about to get involved in the story. Maul vs. Marrok Established The Empire's Threat... & Devon's Potential Alliance With The Shadow Lord Marrok and Maul's red lightsabers clashing in Maul - Shadow LordCredit: MovieStillsDB The duel that preceded Marrok's conversation with Palpatine, though, was just as exciting as seeing the Star Wars Sith Lord. The fight saw Maul and Devon team up against the Inquisitor atop a high-speed train. The first deeper meaning this has for the story is that the Inquisitors mean business. Maul is one of the strongest lightsaber fighters in the entire saga, and Marrok more than held his own against him and Devon combined. This establishes the threat of the Empire in a way that is befitting of the show's in-narrative hesitance to have them involved; Maul did not want the Empire to come to Janix, with Marrok showcasing exactly why he deemed them a threat to his plan before he acquired the power he desired. Related Thanks To Recent Star Wars Projects, The Empire Has Never Been More Intimidating Thanks to recent Star Wars projects, we've all been reminded just how intimidating and scary the Galactic Empire truly is in the galaxy far, far away. Beyond that, though, Marrok's presence moved Maul slightly closer to achieving a crucial part of his plan: recruiting Devon. Maul has spent the first five episodes of the show trying to prove to Devon that he is not the villain she thinks he is. Now that Marrok has appeared, almost defeated Maul, her, and almost killed Rylee, Devon sees that Maul may have been right. Maul tells Devon that she finally sees the face of her true enemy after deactivating her lightsaber in front of the former. This indicates that Devon is coming around to the idea that Maul and she are on the same side by default, given the Empire's tyranny over the galaxy. Yes, his methods of opposing the galaxy may be more extreme than hers, but Devon is certainly acting less antagonistically towards the Shadow Lord after Marrok's emergence. The Empire's Darkness Will Only Spread Over Maul - Shadow Lord's Future The Inquisitor from Tales of the Jedi lifting his double-bladed lightsaber in front of a burning village Aside from the potential for Palpatine or Vader to have a role in the show, Marrok's final scene indicates just how much darker the future of the story will be. Marrok has not only confirmed to Palpatine that Maul is present on Janix, but also that he has allied himself with two Jedi. Naturally, Palpatine will tighten his grip on Janix to remove these threats to his power. One way in which he will do so was teased in Maul - Shadow Lord's trailers. Besides Marrok, another Inquisitor, the Eleventh Brother, was shown to be involved in the story. This character first appeared in Tales of the Jedi, with Maul - Shadow Lord promising to further develop him as a Jedi hunter. In the remaining episodes of Maul - Shadow Lord, the Eleventh Brother and Marrok will undoubtedly continue pushing down on Maul, his operation, Lawson, Devon, and Daki. This is only going to make their lives more difficult, especially after Lawson failed to smuggle the Jedi offworld using his contacts. What Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord episode 6's ending means on a broader scale, though, is that the Empire will only further oppress the people of Janix in their search for not only the titular protagonist, but the Jedi he is trying to recruit, too.
