Defender impresses in England - Newcastle and Manchester United now leading chase
Newcastle United and Manchester United have been given fresh encouragement in their pursuit of Ousmane Diomande, after the defender delivered what is being described in Portugal as a decisive “transfer audition” against Premier League opposition.
The 22-year-old centre-back has already been on the radar of English clubs. However, his recent performances against Arsenal in the Champions League appear to have shifted his standing in the market.
Diomande featured across the two-legged quarter-final tie and produced commanding displays. Portuguese press describe his showing in London as dominant, highlighting his anticipation, physical strength and tactical intelligence.
In direct duels, he handled one of Sporting’s main attacking threats and imposed himself throughout the match. That performance has now travelled quickly across England.
According to A BOLA, the reaction in the Premier League was immediate. Interest from Newcastle United and Manchester United has intensified following the Arsenal tie.
Both clubs see Diomande as a prototype modern centre-back. At 190cm, he combines physical presence with mobility and composure in possession. He also offers reliability, having already made over 120 appearances for Sporting despite his age.
The defender has now shown he can perform at Champions League level against top English opposition.
That matters for clubs like Newcastle and Manchester United, who are both assessing defensive reinforcements ahead of the summer window.
Crystal Palace have in fact been the club most consistently linked with the defender, having tracked him for a long period and explored a move last summer, that ultimately failed to materialise. But now the ‘sharks’ are starting to circle.
Price point becoming clearer
Sporting CP renewed Diomande’s contract until 2030 earlier this year, maintaining a release clause of €80m (£69m).
Despite that figure, the Portuguese club are understood to be open to negotiations around €50m (£43m), reflecting his current market value and recent rise.
Now, with Diomande’s valuation reinforced, competition is stronger.
What happens next
Ousmane Diomande is expected to be part of Ivory Coast’s squad for the upcoming World Cup. That tournament could further elevate his status and price.
Sporting are aware of the growing attention. While they would prefer to keep the defender for another season, they are also preparing for a possible sale.
The timing is becoming critical. Newcastle United and Manchester United now have clearer evidence of his level, and a defined price range to work within.
After passing a high-level test against Arsenal, Diomande’s situation has changed.
He is no longer just being watched. He is now being seriously considered.
