Major haul of 13 million cigarettes found by detector dog at Dublin Port
A major haul of 13 million contraband cigarettes has been found at Dublin Port by one of Revenue's detector dogs.Kobe the detector dog, along with a mobile x-ray scanner, made the find on Friday, January 2. The container they were located in arrived via Rotterdam and was listed as furniture.The illegal cigarettes are valued at around €12.3 million. Losses to the Exchequer come in at around €9.6 million.A Revenue spokesman said: "The seizure was made following routine risk profiling, with the assistance of Revenue’s mobile X-ray scanner and detector dog Kobe. The contraband was uncovered during an examination of a container that had arrived via Rotterdam, which had been manifested as furniture."The smuggled cigarettes, branded ‘Excellence’, have an estimated value of €12.3 million and represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of €9.6 million. Investigations are ongoing."This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing work targeting smuggling and shadow economy activity.
