Huge update on Ireland baby formula recall after toxic ingredient detected
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has provided a significant update regarding Nestle's decision to withdraw batches of SMA baby formula.On Monday, the FSAI released a food recall notice for multiple SMA baby formula products following the detection of a hazardous toxin called cereulide which can trigger nausea and vomiting. The most recent update released by the FSAI on Wednesday informed consumers that an extra batch of SMA Nutrition Alfamino infant formula had been included in the list of affected SMA products subject to recall. The update also aimed to clarify the accurate expiry date for one of the batches featured in the original product recall announced earlier this week."Further to food alert 2026.01, batch 51700017Y1 of SMA Nutrition Alfamino infant formula is also subject to recall. Furthermore, the correct expiry date of batch 51210017Y1 is May-27. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale," states the update on the FSAI website.Nestlé is urging customers who have bought any of these batches to get in touch via its online form, including a photograph of the product and the batch code: www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch or by ringing its careline on 1800 931 832. The FSAI has explained that cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus, can be extremely heat resistant and may already be present in food, reports the Irish Mirror.Consuming foods containing this toxin can lead to nausea and severe vomiting, with symptoms typically appearing within five hours.
