Plans submitted to turn Cheeverstown House campus into homes for older people

Plans to turn the Cheeverstown campus into residential homes for older people have been submitted. The voluntary organisation is exploring options for the use of the Templeogue campus as it aims to provide supports within the local community. As part of these plans, the campus will no longer be fit for the organisation's original purpose.Cheeverstown provides residential, respite and day services to almost 400 children and adults with an intellectual disability in south Dublin.According to the application, "the intention of Cheeverstown is to achieve full decongregation (moving from a supported living option to living in the community) and in this way to “radically improve the quality of life of people living in congregated settings".It continued: "Following moving people to their own homes in their local communities near their natural supports, Cheeverstown will be left with the 8 acre site in Templeogue which is no longer fit for its original purpose. This gives rise to immediate considerations for the board of directors of Cheeverstown (the“Board”) as to the future use of the campus property. Taking all relevant factors into consideration, the Board has made a strategic decision to consider all options in respect of the campus site including a potential disposal."It will include a residential development of 99 dwellings to provide 35 single storey houses and 63 apartments in two three-storey buildings, together with the conversion of Cheeverstown House (a protected structure) in to a single dwelling. The works will consist of building 26 new houses made up of 12 one bed and 14 two bed, and refurbishing six existing single storey buildings to six three-bed semi-detached houses and three detached four-bed houses. The two apartment blocks will include 46 one bedroom and 17 two bedroom apartments. Also included within the application is demolition of buildings forming part of the existing residential institution, including residences at Oak House, Rowan House, Elm House, Maple Row, Nos. 1 - 4 Cedar Terrace and Nos. 4 and 5 The Beeches and 1, 2 and 6 Sycamore Way including ancillary outbuildings and extensions and also the existing school building. Four houses and two apartments already on site will be retained as part of a "strategy of re-integration of the Cheeverstown community in to the wider neighbourhood".Observations on the application can be made until February 4. A decision is expected by February 25.Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content.
