Ireland weather: Met Eireann issues snow and rain warning for Storm Goretti
Met Eireann has issued a status yellow snow and rain warning as the effects of Storm Goretti hit Ireland.The Irish National Meteorological service delivered a status yellow warning for Cork, Kerry, Waterford and Wexford. These counties may see adverse impacts due to the storm.Storm Goretti, named by the French Met Office Météo-France, has emerged as a significant weather system over northwest Europe. Northern France, Wales and England are expected to be hit with disruptive snow.Met Eireann's warning for Ireland sad that heavy rain will turn to sleet and snow, with accumulations possible. The warning is in place from 12:00 on Thursday, January 8, to 20:00 on the same day.Potential impacts include hazardous travelling conditions. Those driving need to be wary of spot flooding and poor visibility.Icy patches also pose a threat to road users and pedestrians.Met Eireann said: "Storm Goretti: Rain, heavy at times, will turn to sleet and snow in places on Thursday afternoon, particularly at elevation. Accumulations are possible."For all of Ireland, the weather forecast includes rain and drizzle, potentially turning to sleet and snow. Frost in places with lowest temperatures of -2 to 2 degrees.The forecast reads: "Thickening cloud along with outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue to push up over much of the country from the south and southwest on Thursday morning, though parts Ulster will remain largely dry with just a few showers near the west coast. The rain will turn heavy at times near the south coast, potentially turning to sleet and snow over parts of Munster and south Leinster in the afternoon, before clearing eastwards through the late afternoon and evening. Afternoon highs of 2 to 5 degrees with light variable winds becoming light to moderate northerly in the afternoon, fresh to strong and gusty near the south coast."Heading into the coming weekend, it is due to be "less cold than as of late" but temperatures remain rather low.
