Scania deploys first electric 8×4 mining tipper in Sweden

The electric tipper is powered by two MP20 battery packs with a combined installed capacity of 416 kWh, paired with a 400 kW EM C 1-4 electric motor. Scania says the vehicle fully replaces a comparable diesel-powered truck, demonstrating that its electric drivetrain technology can now meet the extreme requirements of heavy mining applications.Developed on Scania’s modular electric platform, the tipper is designed to handle heavy payloads and challenging road conditions typical of mining environments. The vehicle is nicknamed ‘Sleipner’ and transports waste rock from a chute loading station to a backfilling site at Tingvallskulle, covering a route of around five kilometres with an elevation gain of 250 metres. Fully loaded, the truck operates at a gross weight of 60 tonnes, with a payload of 38 tonnes.According to LKAB, the new vehicle could play a key role in decarbonising internal logistics at the mine. “If it performs as expected, we will have a fully fossil-free solution for transporting waste rock in truly demanding mining operations,” said Peter Gustavsson, Project Manager for Electrification of Mobile Machines at LKAB. The company transports more than five million tonnes of waste rock annually, making the potential emissions savings significant. Since 2022, a fully electric Scania 6×4 heavy tipper has been operating at the Malmberget site, providing operational data and experience that informed the development of the latest vehicle. Both trucks are used in real-world mining conditions, allowing Scania and LKAB to jointly test, evaluate and refine electrified solutions.“Partnerships like this are essential for learning and accelerating progress,” said Tony Sandberg, Head of Scania Pilot Partner. He added: “Each new truck we put into operation helps us and our customers understand how to scale electrification across the toughest environments. This vehicle is just the start of many more mining solutions to come.”scania.com
