UN: Femicide rates in Africa triple global average | DW News

Every ten minutes a woman is intentionally killed by a partner or family member. According to a UN report, Africa recorded the highest number of female victims of intimate partner or family-related killings in 2024. In Kenya, the number of women killed each year has been rising. Nearly 170 women were murdered in 2024, the highest toll in eight years, and almost double the number in 2022. In just three months, 97 women were killed, averaging more than one femicide per day. The statistics also show more than half of the victims in Kenya in 2024 were young women and girls. I'll be joined by an expert after this report from DW's Sella Oneko in Nairobi. A warning, that the report contains distressing descriptions of violence. 00:00 UN: Femicide rates in Africa triple global average Awino Okech, Professor of Feminist Studies, University of London For more news go to: http://www.dw.com/en/ Follow DW on social media: ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dwnews ►TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@dwnews ►Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deutschewellenews/ ►Twitter: https://twitter.com/dwnews Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: https://www.youtube.com/dwdeutsch Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/user/deutschewelleenglish?sub_confirmation=1 #Femicide #Kenya #UN
