Joanna Donnelly delights fans with online return to weather forecasting
Former RTE presenter Joanna Donnelly has delighted fans with a return to weather forecasting online. The 54-year-old stepped away from Met Eireann in April after three decades with the meteorological service, ten of which she spent presenting the weather forecast for RTE. Earlier this month, the Dubliner announced a surprise bid for the Aras but exited the race three days later, admitting she was "naive to think I was up to the challenges of the campaign." Most recently, Joanna reprised her role as a meteorologist by giving fans an update on the weather online. Posting on TikTok yesterday ahead of the heavy rain that hit the country, Joanna said: "Good morning, I thought I'd start the day with a little update on the weather. "There's rain coming but it's lovely and blue skies and sunshine to start for much of the country. Now the cloud associated with the rain that's coming later had already gotten into the south and southwest of the country. "The rain will be a good bit later though, that's because this rain is associated with a warm front and what's happening with a warm front is the low pressure system is sending this warmer air ahead, the warm air rises up over the cold air at the surface so the water vapour starts to condense up above at the top of the atmosphere and it forms cirrus clouds, that's the thin white clouds that happen right up at the top of the atmosphere. "They start to thicken and come down to the surface and then when you get to the surface you'll see the rain start." Joanna added: "So that's why the cloud comes well ahead of the rain with a warm front, so the rain isn't expected to get through until later on this afternoon and then spreading northeastwards through the rest of the afternoon and evening so it will probably be dry for most of the country for much of the day. "There is a weather warning in operation, Met Eireann have issued a yellow level rainfall warning for the southwest and parts of the west of the country so it is going to get pretty wet once this rain gets growing later on this afternoon and into this evening. "And then after this rain, tomorrow morning it will be sunshine and showers then for the rest of the week with possible a bit of a longer spell of rain still associated with that same low pressure system pulling up more moisture from the south coming through at the weekend Friday and into the weekend might see some more heavy spells of rain across the east of the country this time. "I'll update tomorrow though with more details on that. In the meantime have a lovely day, slan go foil."
