Man arrested after elderly cyclist killed in Meath hit-and-run
Gardaí have arrested a man after an elderly cyclist was killed in a Meath hit-and-run last week. The collision happened just before 10am on Friday on the R156 at Batterstown, near Ballivor. The cyclist, a man in his 80s, was rushed to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, where he was pronounced dead - while the other vehicle involved failed to remain at the scene. Today, Gardaí confirmed they have arrested a man in his 40's as part of the investigation. A garda spokesperson said: "This male is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and can be detained for up to 24 hours. A vehicle has also been recovered. "Investigating Gardaí at Trim Garda Station continue to appeal to the public for information. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area of Batterstown, Ballivor, Co. Meath, between 9.30am and 10.00am on Friday 12th September 2025, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí. "Investigations continue and further updates will follow."
