Munro Vehicles completes validation testing of its M Series 4×4 EVs with $23M in orders
Series M, the all-electric off-road centric model from Scottish startup Munro Vehicles, is on the cusp of prototype validation before reaching customers. With a new chairperson in place, Munro says it has over £17 million in preliminary orders for its unique 4×4 EVs.
Glasgow, Scotland’s Munro Vehicles has been on our radar for over three years now and is getting closer to bringing its unique approach to EVs—designing large, boxy, multi-ton 4×4 trucks—to market. If there are any doubts about Munro’s progress, check our past coverage.
Munro’s current M-Series 4×4 EVs are almost unrecognizable compared to the 2.7-ton, Humvee-inspired prototype we first saw in 2022. If and when they reach customers, the M-Series EVs will come as either SUVs or pickups, each complete with full-time 4×4 electric drivetrains.
Although things have been quiet on the news front the past year, Munro has continued to try and fulfill its prophecy of becoming the first vehicle manufacturer to reach scaled production in Scotland since 1981. Today, Munro announced its M-Series 4×4 EVs are capping off an 18-month validation testing phase en route to trekking its own muddy path through a multi-billion-dollar electric SUV segment. In a welcome progress update from Munro Vehicles, the Scottish startup relayed that it has completed an 18-month durability off-road test program conducted almost entirely off-road. Munro’s trials with its M-Series 4×4 EV prototypes focused on “task-specific objectives to meet the requirements of the brand’s customers in industries such as mining, defense, emergency response, and utilities as they transition to net zero.”
With prototype validation approaching the official sign-off for production, Munro already has enough M-Series orders secured to keep it busy into 2027. Per the company, it has delivered 4 M-Series 4×4 EVs to date and has preliminary orders for 246 additional builds, equating to £17,388,902 ($23,482,015).
To help achieve these production goals, Munro co-founders Russ Peterson (CEO) and Ross Anderson (Head of Powertrain) have appointed Avinash Rugoobur as the new company chairperson. Rugoobur held executive positions at startups like Arrival (remember them?) and OEMs like GM.
Although the M-Series is street legal, Munro has been adamant that the M-Series is a true 4×4 EV designed for the off-road first, not vice versa, like all other electric SUVs on the market today. Munro co-founder Ross Anderson elaborated:
Most vehicles in the SUV and Truck segments are now designed with road use as their primary function; those attributes often compromise their suitability in off-road and commercial environments.
Our products have market-leading off-road attributes, an underlying platform that can be adapted to specialist applications, and a unique safety strategy designed to address the risks light vehicles face in extreme and unpredictable environments. By producing durable, long-lasting, and serviceable electric vehicles, Munro offers a clean alternative for sectors that traditionally rely on fuel-hungry 4x4s to operate.
Customers who opt to order an M-Series 4×4 can now choose between three configurations: SUV, pickup, or chassis model.
Customers can also choose between two variants with different output levels for those body types. The “standard” M170 features an 85 kWh LFP battery pack that powers an axial flux motor produces 170 kW of power and 600 Nm of torque. It has a 2,250 kg (4,960 lbs.) towing capacity and a 1,050 kg (2,315 lbs.) payload.
The M280 variant also features an 85 kWh LFP battery pack, but can deliver 280 kW of power and 700 Nm of torque, a 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs.) towing capacity, and a 1,050 kg payload. The Munro M-Series 4×4 EV starts at an MSRP of £63,000 ($85,075), not including VAT.
