Kho Kho, a traditional Indian sport, is a game of speed, agility, and strategy, played between two teams of 12 players each, though only 9 players from each team are active on the field at any given time. The game is usually played on a rectangular field, 29 meters long and 16 meters wide, divided into two halves. The central line runs through the middle, with 8 wooden or metal poles positioned along this line, equally spaced. These poles play a crucial role in the game, aiding players in dodging, turning, and maneuvering during play. Here Is the list of basic kho kho rules and regulation.
Basic Rules
- Teams and Players: Each team consists of 12 players, but only 9 players take the field during a match. The match is divided into two innings, with each team having a chance to chase and defend.
- Chasing and Defending: One team begins as chasers, and the other as defenders. The chasers attempt to catch the defenders by touching them while the defenders try to avoid being caught. Chasers sit in a row facing opposite directions, with one active chaser running after the defenders.
- Kho: The game gets its name from the word "Kho," which is shouted by the chaser when they want to pass the chasing role to a teammate sitting nearby. The teammate immediately becomes the active chaser, while the former chaser takes the seated position.
- Rules for Defenders: Defenders can dodge the chasers by running, zigzagging, or using the poles. However, they must stay within the boundary lines and cannot cross the central line from one half to the other without being tagged.
- Time Limits: Each inning typically lasts for 7 minutes. The team that tags the most defenders within this time or prevents the chasers from tagging them wins the inning.
- Fouls and Penalties: Any foul, such as a chaser crossing the central line or tagging a defender without shouting "Kho," results in a penalty. The opposing team may gain points or additional time based on the severity of the foul.
Kho Kho is a game that requires not just physical prowess but also tactical intelligence, making it a unique and exciting sport.
