EDP Business Awards judge on how to win Large Business award

Awards judge Jamie Waller, who is associate partner at Ensors, Part of Azets, sponsor of the Large Business of the Year category, has worked with a number of medium to large businesses both here and further afield. Here, he explains how Norfolk’s large businesses can shine at the EDP Business Awards. What first brought you into your current role?  I have lived in Norwich my entire life and worked in the accountancy profession for more than 15 years, focusing on audit for medium to large businesses. I joined Ensors to establish its office in Norwich, having previously worked at two top five global accountancy firms. What qualities or stories would make a business stand out to you?  I think stories based on passion and drive are always really interesting. Through successes and failures, the key to a successful business is its motivation. So examples of persistence and reacting and adapting to change are always a good indication of a business’ core. Can you give us an example of a standout previous winner, and what made them exemplary? I would have to mention last years’ winners of Large Business, Alan Boswell Group. It continued to fly the flag for the Norfolk business community, and that ultimately gave it the edge. All of the category finalists were a privilege to meet and spend time with. What impact will winning this award have on a business?  The business awards provide unmatched brand exposure and networking opportunities for all of the finalists. To then go on and win your category is a massive accreditation for you to share with your staff and celebrate your business as a whole. What’s a memorable quote or motto you believe captures the essence of building an exceptional business?  I would say the age-old Norfolk proverb “you may know a carpenter by his chips”, particularly represents this. It highlights the longstanding impact of what you build and nurture, which I think is very applicable to Norfolk businesses. What three pieces of advice would you give to businesses entering this category? Tell your business’ story, how did you get to where you are and who has helped you along the way. Incorporate why you’re proud to be a successful Norfolk business. Focus on what sets you apart from other businesses. To submit your entries for the EDP Business Awards 2026, please visit the website at edpbusinessawards.co.uk The deadline to submit entries is Sunday, July 12, 2026. Award criteria The Large Business of the Year (over £5m turnover) award will be given to the company that demonstrates all-round excellence in business. The judging will focus on trading performance, future objectives and a business’ competitive advantage. Examples of strategies which have driven business growth are also key. If your business achievements are impressive, then this award is for you.
