Misha Collins Wants to Remake 1 Supernatural Episode for Castiel's Story
At CCXP this weekend, Castiel actor Misha Collins shared his perspective on one Supernatural episode that he would like to see remade to address a controversial decision for Castiel's (and Dean Winchester's) story. Although Jensen Ackles' Dean and Jared Padalecki's Sam are the leading characters of Supernatural, Castiel is a fan-favorite major character—which made his conclusion controversial. In Supernatural season 15, episode 18, Castiel was taken by the Empty, which was the last time audiences saw him. According to Misha Collins, leaving Castiel out of Supernatural's final episode, "Carry On," wasn't the right call. ScreenRant's Jordan Williams was in attendance at CCXP, where Collins revealed he'd want to remake "Carry On" to focus more on Castiel.
Dean Winchester crying in Supernatural in the episode Despair after Castiel is taken by the Empty
The Supernatural finale was controversial for various reasons, particularly related to Dean's death, but Castiel's absence in the episode was another issue audiences raised following the show's conclusion. For many, it wasn't only disappointing that Castiel didn't get one last appearance but also frustrating that Dean and Castiel's decade-long on-screen relationship ended how it did. Rather than an emotional reunion, the last scene Dean and Castiel have together is the one in which the Empty takes Castiel—seemingly permanent, at the time—and Cas tells Dean he loves him (to which Dean does not verbally respond). Then, Dean slides to the floor and cries. Collins has previously shared Supernatural hot takes regarding this very scene. The finale did confirm that Castiel had survived the Empty and was working alongside Jack, who had saved him, which at least brought some comfort to viewers who were concerned that Castiel really was trapped in the Empty forever. However, that only increased some frustrations, perhaps including Collins', that Castiel didn't actually appear in this episode. It's worth mentioning that this choice was in part driven by COVID-19. There was actually a different finale planned, which would have seen many beloved characters from over the show's 15 years return, Castiel among them. Sadly, the pandemic restrictions forced the plan to change, so Dean and Castiel never got that final moment. It therefore makes sense that Collins would like to see this episode remade, no doubt showing Castiel and Dean finally getting that reunion in Heaven. Of course, this isn't the only possibility. Fans have been begging for Supernatural season 16 since the show ended, and bringing Cas and Dean back together is likely high on viewers' wishlist. Whether any such reboot or revival will actually come remains to be seen. In the meantime, though, Misha Collins' idea that the Supernatural finale needs to be remade to better focus on Castiel (or include him at all) is absolutely valid.
